Windows 11 Webcam Not Working? Test the Camera, App and Browser
Troubleshoot a Windows 11 webcam through hardware, Windows permissions and app settings. Test locally first and avoid broad privacy changes or random drivers.
Windows 11 webcam not working in one meeting app does not immediately mean the camera is broken. A physical shutter, an operating-system permission, the app’s selected camera and a browser’s site permission are separate points to check. Start with a local test so you know which layer is failing.
Save any ongoing work and close unnecessary camera apps before testing. Use a neutral background and avoid recording private material. A few deliberate checks are more useful than repeatedly reinstalling a meeting app without a baseline.
1. Inspect the hardware controls
Look for a lens shutter, privacy switch or a manufacturer-specific camera key. For an external webcam, check its connection and try a direct supported port rather than beginning through a complex dock arrangement. Confirm that the device is intended to work with your computer and operating system.
Open Windows’ Camera app or another approved local camera test. If the local preview fails, record the exact message. If it works, move to the app or browser where the original problem occurred.
2. Review Windows camera access
Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guide describes checks under Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. The relevant controls can differ between Microsoft Store apps and desktop applications. Enable only the access needed for the application you intend to use.
If a setting is managed by an organization, ask the administrator about the approved configuration. Do not remove management controls or disable security software to get a preview working.
| Result | Likely area to inspect next |
|---|---|
| No local camera preview | Hardware switch, connection, device status and Windows access |
| Local preview works, meeting app fails | Selected camera and app access |
| Desktop app works, browser meeting fails | Browser site permission and camera selection |
| Wrong view appears | Another connected or virtual camera is selected |
3. Check the application’s selected input
Meeting software can remember a different camera, including a disconnected USB device or virtual camera. Open its video settings and select the intended input. Check whether another program is actively using the device. Close one candidate at a time and retest rather than terminating every background process.
For browser meetings, inspect the permission for the exact meeting site. A saved denial on one origin may explain why other sites work. Microsoft documents the distinction between Windows camera privacy controls and an application’s own use of the device.
4. Use supported update and repair routes
If the device remains unavailable, follow Microsoft’s diagnostic sequence and the PC or camera manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Prefer Windows Update and official support downloads over third-party driver bundles. Record whether the issue began after an update, a dock change or a new privacy setting.
A small incident note helps: model, Windows version, error message, local test result and affected apps. This gives support a reproducible starting point without requiring a recording of your room or meeting.
5. Run a short final rehearsal
- Confirm the expected view in the app’s preview.
- Check the microphone separately; a working camera does not prove audio access.
- Join an approved test meeting if available.
- Reconnect the usual dock or peripherals and repeat.
- Close the camera session and confirm it is no longer in use.
For the audio side, use our Chrome microphone troubleshooting guide. If the problem follows a dock, our USB-C cable capability guide helps identify the specification to check. Fix the failing layer while keeping unrelated privacy choices intact.
